Subject: Dcotors "protest"??!! Doctor’s “protest” has been a key issue at the moment. Everyone seems frustrated and angered over the issue and sadly no one is trying to resolve it or finding the truth behind it. Instead of tackling the problem (which I believe is their primary responsibility) the civil service commission and the ‘government’ were quick to label doctors as inhuman, selfish professionals. It’s true a lot of doctors are on sick leave (should be considered the reasons as it’s not an everyday joke they crack) but it doesn’t halt the emergency cases brought to hospitals. If Civil Service and Government thinks it’s only the few hours of OPD time which is the doctor’s duty then they are very wrong. They do 24 on-calls, ward rounds 24/7 to care the most ill patients in hospital. This doesn’t only imply IGMH but the call doctor of IGMH has the responsibility to care various emergency cases all over Maldives. They get calls from all regions of the country and ‘usually’ with less-competent foreign doctors in islands the number always increases. Even in last few days despite the ‘protest’ they have attended all life threatening and emergency cases. If 30 expatriate doctors can resolve it then it shouldn’t be a big problem first place. People are mainly frustrated because they want to consult local doctors. Whether anyone agrees or not this is the truth. So without knowing the responsibilities of doctors and the noble work they do it’s a very immoral and unwise act by sources within government, CSM and Human rights commission to release public statements against them. I fully support the statement by Dr. Waheed, “doctarunah kurimathi vefaivaa massala thakaai doctarun insaaniyyathah kuramungedhaa hidhumathuge agu vazan nukurevey adhi ekan kan rangalha neygi thibe, doctarun kuramun gedhaa kanthah thakah dhandi nubeynuman govaalan”. We all know the 1 billion Ruffiya government allocated for salary increment wasn’t fairly distributed. Doctors’ salary is revised with a 0.03% increment which can be taken as an index of how civil service commission ranks the profession. In addition there are some doctors who are getting 40% less-of-basic-salary. (If economic crisis and inflation has to be concerned then in such a crisis every laari counts and has to be distributed fairly) Because the profession is treated in such low levels many doctors prefer to migrate abroad where they get the respect and dignity which they deserve. I tell you that’s what most medical students feel too. So the future of this profession is very murky. To make it back to where it should, to get the rights for the profession which it highly deserves, what’s wrong in voicing for it??! Why cant our ‘Aneh dhivehirajje” address these issues???? In my opinion the fundamental way of establishing a ‘heyo verikan’ which president Nasheed is very keen on is to give an ear to complain of even the common person and trying to resolve it. It may not happen the way everyone wants. But it should be addressed for sure. There are doctors who have worked/working for months and months even without getting salary. The previous regime has used IGMH as a ‘sort of ‘political weapon and with all chaos politicians created blame went to doctors BUT they never PROTESTED. Doctors were given a less salary than secretary grade before yet they haven’t PROTESTED. Because of such various factors public treated them like shits. Verbal to physical abuse to doctors is a common problem they face. BUT they remained silent just doing the humanitarian work. Does anyone thought about all these before jumping to the conclusions doctors are selfish, heartless, cowards…….???!!!
the above is an e mail I recieved recently
