At portal of entry (KLIA) you can show the offer letter from Universiti Sains Malaysia. But if I am not mistaken they still give you a tourist visa there. Never mind!
Just come to Kelantan. If you come by flight just tell the immigration officers there (dark navy uniforms) that you are coming for studies in USM. Then they will say Oh. Doctor la, so you are quite easily welcomed without much exploring the luggage.
Same goes for the dependent (husband). Just bring you marriage certificate (English copy please!). This is required for visa at least. In the airport you may be released without checking it.
In campus accommodation in USM (actually it is HUSM, H is for Hospital) is almost always full. (this is because the rule of allowing only 1 year there does not work, some students live there for ages even with children). It is better if you ask Marina or Linda in Postgraduate office to book you a double room in guest house of HUSM campus. It is around 65 a night. If it is full you can stay near by guest houses or budget inns for almost same cost. I recommend Mr Lee (Lee guest house) since he is very helpful. There is a new stay in like a budget in cross the road of USM. i do not know how much they cost. Some one said it is OK.
When you come to Kelantan bring all you documents including birth certificate, marriage certificate and any certificate including driving licence. even chest Xray.
